Book Review - The Effective Executive and Lessons for You

Are you effective at work or at school?

If you know you could work or study better, then you need to read The Effective Executive: The Definitive Guide to Getting the Right Things Done by famed management guru, Peter Drucker.

The good news is - You can learn to be more effective. Read on!

In his epic tome which was first published in 1967, Peter Drucker outlines the five key practices that are hallmarks of effective executives.

While executives are the focus of Drucker's text , anyone can follow his advice to become better at the office or school.

As Drucker has written,  some of the best CEOs have varied backgrounds, personalities and would never be classified as stereotypical leaders.

According to Drucker, executive effectiveness is about organizing your life so that you accomplish "first things first" by setting priorities, as fellow guru Steven Covey writes in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Effective Executive - Setting Priorities

Setting priorities is the first practice of effective people.

Ask: "What do I need to do?"

Then, organize your life to do it and most importantly - do it correctly!

If you do not set goals, it is difficult to improve your circumstances.

The question is not “What do I want to do?”

You must take the question seriously in order to achieve (managerial) success.

In The Effective Executive, Drucker shows you how leaders in every organization set clear priorities, focus the strengths of the people on those priorities, and make tough choices about what to do and what not to do in the face of uncertainty.

Effectiveness is Learned

No one is born knowing how to be effective.

Sure, mistakes will be made along the path to be more effective in accomplishing your goals.

Persistence is the key.

As Napoleon Hill once said: Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.

Conclusion

Are you ready to be more effective?

Pour over Drucker's The Effective Executive and write an action plan to accomplish your goals.

Focus on results. Keep the big picture in mind. You will not only be more effective, but successful as well!
