Movies are entertainment, but also can yield insights into their subject matter.

The business world is a popular topic in Hollywood productions where big deals, envy, power lunches, and strategy and tactics are an everyday affair.

The following seven movies include gripping drama, irreverent comedy and thought-provoking films that can inspire and motivate business professionals.

1. The Godfather

Respect is paramount in business and so is following proper etiquette as the scene from The Godfather illustrates. The iconic Marlon Brando (The Godfather ) schools an uncouth acquaintance on these virtues.

2. Glengary Glenn Ross

Blake (Alec Baldwin) in Glengarry Glen Ross gives a lesson in marketing and the principle of “incentive.” If you don’t produce sales, you are out of a job. That is usually a strong reward to excite the sales staff.

3. Wall Street

Wall Street has its cast of strong-willed characters. From wolves of Wall Street to Gordon Gekko, Hollywood loves to perpetuate the stereotypical Alpha male spirit in the cradle of capitalism. Gordon’s immortal “greed is good speech” is a classic in cinema.

4. Disclosure

Office politics gets the best of  Meredith (Demi Moore) in Michael Crichton‘s  Disclosure. Tom Sanders (Michael Douglas) is sexually-harrassed by her. Oh, but she still has a plan to get ahead in the rough-and-tumble corporate world as the above scene shows.

5. Risky Business

Joel (Tom Cruise) learns the Risky Business  of an entrepreneur along with the economics of supply and demand all in a weekend when his parents go out of town. He learns fast and the real world education gets him into Princeton.

6. Jerry McGuire

The all important mission statement is where most businesses begin as we see sports agent Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) typing his own. Sports and business are so intertwined in many cases – the personalities, contracts, performance issues, and the winners and losers.

7. Trading Places

Trading Places  combines class warfare, greed, commodity exchange chicanery, and double dealing into a comedic romp with an all-star cast including Dan Akyroyd, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Ameci, and Ralph Bellamy.
