In our Business English Breakdown weekly series, we look at business news from China, and either Brazil, the European Union, or Japan.

I examine the news article for three (3) key phrases to pre-teach vocabulary that you may not know. So, when you read the article, you will better understand it!

Headline: Economy managed to stay above water

Economy managed to stay above water - In other words, the economy grew a bit. Imagine trying to keep your own head just above the water while swimming.

external demand has been too tepid... - So external demand was weak. 

....to bolster the recovery - To bolster means to boost or to give strength. In our case, the economy did not gain much strength.

Now you should be able to read the article and understand it better. It is relatively short but notice the use of imagery of barely staying above water to give you a feeling beyond the words on the page.
