IELTS Vocabulary

As you probably know, building a strong vocabulary is one of the best moves you can make for the IELTS.

Indeed, your word wealth is a predictor of lifetime success.

Can you use today's IELTS vocabulary word correctly in your English sentences?



Fluctuate is a powerful verb to describe trends in a chart, graph, or process in Academic Task 1.

Definition: Verb -  to rise and fall irregularly in number or amount 

Example:
The number of graduates from Groucester College fluctuated between 2,000 and 3,500 from 2010 to 2015.

IELTS Grammar


Do you know how to use Bare and Bear correctly in your sentences?



Answer:

Ravi broke the lamp in the store and had to bear its cost.    

But...Janie bared her soul to the judge in an attempt to get less punishment for stealing the Corvette.

Use bear for "to endure or to yield."

Ex: Jaime must bear the responsibility for failing his exam - he never studied.

Use bare for "to uncover or to expose."

The struggling actress was poorly paid to bare her breasts in her small movie role.

Listening is considered the language skill you use the most. Active listening is a skill to hone for IELTS Excellence.

However, many IELTS candidates lose points not necessarily from misinterpreting the audio, but spelling!

IELTS Listening and Spelling

If you get the correct answer, one of the biggest problems for candidates in the Listening Section is misspelling their answers.





Both British and US spelling conventions are accepted - like theatre or theater.
Be sure to choose one way of spelling and use it throughout your exam.

Spelling errors are heavily penalized on the exam.

Along with solid vocabulary, you need to be able to spell your words correctly as well.

IELTS Vocabulary

As you probably know, building a strong vocabulary is one of the best moves you can make for the IELTS.

For IELTS Academic Task 1, you need to analyze a chart, graph or process.

Marginally is a great word you can use to talk about change. 



Example:

The production of widgets fell marginally between 1989 and 1999. 

Thus, there was only a slight or negligible change.

IELTS Grammar

Do you know how to use Fewer and Less correctly in your sentences?




Answer:

We wear less clothing in hot weather. 

But...We wear fewer clothes in hot weather.

Use fewer if you’re referring to people or things in the plural (e.g. houses, newspapers, dogs, students, children).

Use less when you’re referring to something that can’t be counted or doesn’t have a plural (e.g. money, air, time, music, rain).

Even though grammar is not explicitly graded on the exam, be sure to devote part of your IELTS preparation to studying your weak points of grammar.
